Interesting. Will this become a trend?

Well... I'd been considering trying EVE.. but it sounds like i'm going to scratch it off my list, now.

If I wanted to get my face kicked into the curb by little kids with lots of time to ramp their hand-eye coordination up, i'd PLAY AN FPS. There are quite a few FPSs out there that I could play if I enjoyed that kind of thing.

I don't; i'd much rather tab through targets, tap face, and know that as long as I have effects B, R, and Q active on me (and I need to keep an eye on the support that's giving me R and Q) that I can, barring statistical anomaly, weather the attack F that i'm most likely going to get thrown at me. For the most part, in combat, I don't want to touch the mouse at all if I can help it - I usually use it to click health bars on my team display at most since the number lines on the keyboard are rather full - the mouse makes me slow down and have to do everything sluggishly and deliberately and it is NOT FUN. I play RPG games specifically so that my character's skill is the relevant attribute to target with, not my personal skill.

I play Oblivion sometimes. I find that combat is difficult; I spend about half of each fight trying to get the targeting thing to aim over the monster that is beating on me in hand to hand combat, so that I can blast it with my ranged spells without moving. I don't use ranged spells at range unless I get the drop on the thing and can carefully sight it in.

FPS is kind've one of those things that a minority of people whine and yell for, and which generally only improves things for said minority.

I could be wrong, but from what I got out of the press release, this is going to be a separate, console-based game in the EVE universe. Albeit, I did not read the whole thing, as I do not play FPS games. I did not sound to me like this is going to actually be built into the main EVE game.

Shouldn't this be under industry or off topic?

Gillvane could put it in Introductions if he wanted to :D

Although yes, it should probably be in Industry.

This one's a little more clear
Quote:
It's not only set in the EVE universe, it's actually connected to EVE. The DUST battlefields will determine who controls territory within EVE's world. The EVE Online players will have to contract players of DUST to go in and destabilize territory. CCP's hope is that the first-person shooter crowd on consoles and the PC EVE Online crowd will eventually form alliances together.

I think this is interesting. Who hasn't thought about different games of different genres in the same world? We'll have to see how it plays out.

Ahh, that's what I was thinking.

My only concern is how these players will cross-communicate. I assume most EVE players communicate through chat, and very few XBox players have the ability to type with anything other than an on-screen keyboard (which is not sufficient to the XBLive crowd who is used to incorporated voice-chat). I am assuming that communication would be promoted for alliances to form and for detailed strategy.

It's a separate game, but it's connected to the EVE universe not just set in it. They haven't gone into detail yet, but it sounds like the ground combat in the shooter game will affect things in the MMORPG, like control of planets.

No real details on how big this effect will be, but it certainly gives players something more to fight for than just rankings.

This topic could go in different sections, such as Industry. But it's also about game design, since the design here, as far as I can tell, is to have a console first person shooter that has an affect on the MMORPG PC game.

There are similar designs in games, but I don't know that I've ever seen this particular incarnation before, if I understand how it works correctly. I don't like mixing consoles and PC players in the same game, but this is different. You don't have players directly competing with one another while one is using a controller and one is using a mouse and keyboard, which can never be perfectly balanced since controllers require aimbots and mouse and keyboard do not. Instead, each game is played separately, but the communities interact with one another and affect each others game.

It seems like the obvious risk here is upsetting your regular MMORPG players who might not like having the game affected by console players in a game they never even play. Players who benefit most might be those that enjoy and own both console and PC. They could play the large overall meta game in the MMORPG, then switch to a console for a ground assault and some fast FPS action.
