I could be wrong, but from what I got out of the press release, this is going to be a separate, console-based game in the EVE universe. Albeit, I did not read the whole thing, as I do not play FPS games. I did not sound to me like this is going to actually be built into the main EVE game.
It's a separate game, but it's connected to the EVE universe not just set in it. They haven't gone into detail yet, but it sounds like the ground combat in the shooter game will affect things in the MMORPG, like control of planets.
No real details on how big this effect will be, but it certainly gives players something more to fight for than just rankings.
This topic could go in different sections, such as Industry. But it's also about game design, since the design here, as far as I can tell, is to have a console first person shooter that has an affect on the MMORPG PC game.
There are similar designs in games, but I don't know that I've ever seen this particular incarnation before, if I understand how it works correctly. I don't like mixing consoles and PC players in the same game, but this is different. You don't have players directly competing with one another while one is using a controller and one is using a mouse and keyboard, which can never be perfectly balanced since controllers require aimbots and mouse and keyboard do not. Instead, each game is played separately, but the communities interact with one another and affect each others game.
It seems like the obvious risk here is upsetting your regular MMORPG players who might not like having the game affected by console players in a game they never even play. Players who benefit most might be those that enjoy and own both console and PC. They could play the large overall meta game in the MMORPG, then switch to a console for a ground assault and some fast FPS action.
